In a joint effort, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) recorded 178 incidents related, or suspected to be related, to AVMs in 25 states and territories. outlining a joint GICHD-SIPRI research project that records AVM incidents globally.1 The development and humanitarian impact of AVM contamination in Afghanistan was highlighted as an especially concerning case study and illustrated both the immediate and the long-term effects of AVM incidents.
